Malcolm Dewar made many contributions to Scottish music in Glengarry for over 45 years. Some of those contributions include:
- Teaching and playing drums for the Glengarry Highlanders
- Teaching fiddle to several local students including Ian MacLeod during the late 1960’s/early 1970’s
- Becoming the first Secretary and co-founder of the Glengarry Old Time Fiddlers Association
- Trustee for the Johnny Mooring fund for young musicians in Glengarry
- Member of the Glengarry Strathspey & Reel Society
- Induction to the Glengarry Celtic Music Hall of Fame 2009
Traditional music was always a passion for Malcolm and even after being diagnosed with Alzheimers, his musical ability remained strong.
After his passing in 2012, we, his family started a fundraiser,
“Music for Malcolm”
to preserve his memory, his contributions to Old Time Fiddling and Scottish music and to thank and create incentive for youth musicians.
After 2 years of raising funds for Alzheimers research we decided it was more fitting to start a Music Bursary in Malcolm’s name. We are pleased to have presented this bursary in recognition of the efforts and commitment to Scottish fiddling to the Youth Musicians of Glengarry.
We sincerely hope that this will continue the musical legacy that was so very important to Malcolm.
