Born on June 12, 1858 and raised in the historic community of St. Raphael’s, he grew up immersed in the rich traditions of Scottish and Celtic culture. He began singing at an early age, inspired by songs passed down through generations of his family. He continued singing until his death on February 14, 1949 at the age of 90.
His performances brought the beauty of Gaelic singing to local audiences, ensuring its legacy for generations to come. His talent and passion for Gaelic song have made him a cherished figure in the Celtic music community, both in Glengarry and beyond.
Duncan’s remarkable achievements include the creation of 20 recordings made in 1918 by the Berliner Company of Montreal, which have been recognized as significant cultural treasures. These recordings were noted in research conducted by Harvard University through the efforts of Charles W. Dunn and were added to the National Museum of Canada archives thanks to George Proctor. They were possibly the first Gaelic song recordings ever made.
