Jim McRae

2026, Inductee

Jim’s musical life reflects decades of dedication to performance, community service, and the preservation of Glengarry’s cultural traditions. As both a chorister and a soloist, he has contributed to an impressive range of ensembles, churches, and charitable events, building a legacy defined by generosity, versatility, and a deep love of music.

Jim’s choral work spans more than fifteen years. Since 2008 he has been a committed member of the Knox choir, offering steady leadership and vocal strength. He sang with the Amaryllis Choir from 2014 to 2017, followed by two years with the Acquire Choir from 2017 to 2019. His ongoing involvement with the Kirkin Choir, beginning in 2016, highlights his role as both chorister and soloist. Since 2018 he has also been a featured voice in Carols by Candlelight, becoming a familiar presence in one of the region’s most cherished seasonal traditions.

From 2012 to 2018, Jim was a member of the East Hawkesbury Gospel Sound group, known for its polished harmonies and heartfelt delivery. Their 2015 recording, The Tie That Binds, remains a testament to their popularity and musical excellence. Beyond ensemble work, Jim has performed in at least 30 churches, singing and playing with choirs, bands, and as a soloist. His willingness to share his talents wherever needed including large congregations, small rural churches, special services, and community gatherings, demonstrates a rare combination of humility and dedication.

One of Jim’s proudest accomplishments is his long involvement with Music and Mayhem, a variety show blending skits, comedy, and music. From 2015 to 2024 he was a key member of the cast, performing annually at the Dunvegan hall. The show’s proceeds supported Beyond 21, a nonprofit organization that empowers adults with developmental disabilities.

Jim’s connection to Celtic music began in 1986 when he joined the Seanachies along with Darrel MacLeod and Dave McCormick. They played at many engagements including Laggan Public school and Jack’s Pub in Williamstown. With the addition of Jean Mills, they became Celtica and recorded a cassette tape. He rejoined his former bandmates in 2010 to substitute for Dave on a planned trip to Hungary with the MacCulloch Dancers. Although the trip did not take place until 2011, Jim was already firmly back in the Sixmilecross fold by then. He has remained with Sixmilecross ever since, contributing to their 2014 CD Perfect Pitch and performing with the band at the Glengarry Celtic Music Hall of Fame induction ceremonies in 2017, 2019, and 2024. Through these performances, Jim became a recognized and respected figure within the region’s Celtic musical community.

Throughout his life, Jim has given generously of his time and talent. His contributions to both secular and sacred music have enriched countless lives, and his dedication to Glengarry’s Celtic ideals makes him a deeply deserving inductee into the Glengarry Celtic Music Hall of Fame.
